Treating Wrist and Hand Injuries – Houston Sugar Land
Our office is part of the highly-regarded Fondren Orthopedic Group and we refer complex wrist and hand injuries to hand specialists at Fondren for treatment. The Fondren hand surgeons are board certified and have added qualifications in hand surgery.
Dr. J. Michael Bennett treats certain wrist and hand injuries including carpal tunnel syndrome, distal radius fractures (broken wrist), trigger finger and metacarpal fractures of the hand. He specializes in using the endoscopic approach to carpal tunnel syndrome, when appropriate for the patient, which means that the carpal tunnel surgery consists of two small incisions instead of a longer incision across the middle of the palm of the hand.
If you’re in the Houston, Texas, media market, you may see television and print advertisements which give the impression that only one hand specialist clinic in the Houston area offers the endoscopic approach. That impression is not correct. The endoscopic approach to treating primary carpal tunnel syndrome is available at many hand specialist surgical centers and hospitals across the United States, and we offer that minimally-invasive option to our patients in Sugar Land, Katy, Houston and surrounding areas.
This is what one of our carpal tunnel patients said about Dr. Bennett and our staff.
My first appointment with Dr. Bennett was to discuss carpal tunnel surgery for my right hand. When he looked at my right hand he said ” I think that finger is broken.” I had fallen off a horse 10 days earlier and the finger had swollen up but never hurt. Sure enough, Dr. Bennett had x-rays done and it was broken! A week later I was recovering from carpal tunnel surgery and surgery to put pins in my broken finger. It seemed like a long healing process to me but Dr. Bennett, Maggie and the ladies in the front office were there to reassure me that the time would pass and my finger would heal…of course, the carpal tunnel only took about a week to heal. They were always available for my frantic phone call and to listen to me whine about not getting better quickly enough and not being able to ride my horse again. I’m all healed now but will need another carpal tunnel surgery for my other hand-probably next year. I know Dr. Bennett will be there for me then-and I feel safe in saying that he’ll be thrilled to see me again! And my horse is so excited to have me back in the saddle. 6/17/12 Mary G.
Here’s Dr. Bennett talking about his experience treating wrist and hand injuries.
This is a transcript of Dr. Bennett’s video.
Hello, my name is Dr. J. Michael Bennett. I’m an orthopedic sports medicine physician practicing in the Houston, Katy, and Sugar Land areas. My background is orthopedic surgery with a fellowship in sports medicine obtained from the University of Miami at the UHZ Sports Medicine Institute.
Today I just wanted to go over some of the treatment options regarding hand surgery that we offer at our clinic. We have over 7+ years experience in dealing with surgical issues of the hand, particularly carpal tunnel syndrome. There are two ways of treating carpal tunnel syndrome. There is the traditional procedure of an open, midline palm approach in the middle of the palm, or there’s there is an endoscopic option, which is two small incisions, one of the base of the hand and one at the mid-palm. We put a camera within the wrist and release the ligament in the palm from the inside out. This is called the endoscopic carpal tunnel approach, and this is an approach that we do offer at our clinic for patients who have primary carpal tunnel syndrome.
In addition we do take care of basic fractures of the hand and wrist including distal radius fractures or metacarpal fractures of the hand. If you have any questions regarding any of these issues please feel free to contact our office at 281-633-8600 or go to our websites at orthopedicsportsdoctor.com or JMichaelBennett.com.
