You Should Be Cautious in Your Use of Nutritional Supplements
This is a transcript of a Dr. Jay Show broadcast on 1560TheGame. Dr. J. Michael Bennett is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon and a Fellowship Trained Sports Medicine Physician serving patients from Katy, Fort Bend County, Metro Houston and Southeast Texas from offices in Sugar Land, TX.
This is the second portion of the Show talking about why people should be cautious when using nutritional supplements.
DR. J. MICHAEL BENNETT: So as far as when it comes down to supplements, here are some things you need to be careful of when you’re taking supplements:
- If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. You really want to make sure you’re on the same page with your doctor on this and that you’re making your OB-Gyn aware of what you’re taking because it can make a big difference in your long term care. A lot of these doctors are incorporating supplements, especially Folic Acid and prenatal vitamins.
- If you’re having surgery. Be careful when you’re taking any kind of supplementation because it can make a difference in the effects of anesthesia and can also create issues with bleeding. So you want to make sure you’re off every supplement at least seven days before the procedure.
- If you’re younger than 12 or older than 65. This is something that needs to be discussed with your physician because metabolism is different in these age ranges, and most times metabolism is lower when you’re older and faster when you’re younger. So if you’re taking these supplements they can sometimes build up in the system or have a different type of reaction so you’ve got to be very careful with that as well.
So these are some points to keep in mind when you’re going out and buying these nutritional supplements.
