Here’s the transcript of the Show:

DR. BENNETT — Getting back to sports performance here, it’s definitely a big hot topic right now. You’ll see facilities all over the place that are promoting sports performance and all that is, like I mentioned before, is teaching you the strategies to avoid injury.

LEWIS – At what age should you consider attending a facility that teaches you those strategies?

BENNETT – These days you’ve got everyone from little leaguers to weekend warriors to elite athletes that are looking for some sort of sports performance. One thing that I’m not a big advocate of is these kids out there playing year-round sports and they’re not playing any other sport and they’re just throwing baseballs all year round. These are the kids that I’m seeing at age 10 and 11 destroying their joints and this is from throwing a baseball. Unfortunately it’s an overloading of the joint. When the joint is not mature enough to withstand those kind of stresses, you can overload the joint easily and it can disrupt the cartilage or actually cause the cartilage to fragment. And that becomes a big problem.

So I think that it’s important that parents understand that the best thing for that child is to break up that sport or activity; have them play multiple sports, have them do football, have them do a little bit of soccer, do a little bit of baseball, because that works all of the muscles in the body, it keeps them active and it preserves the remainder of the joints in the body.
